The new EPFL Convention Center is part of a complex of buildings, including a student residence for 500 students, a commercial center, a hotel, a restaurant and administrative facilities.
The international architectural competition was won by EPFL / Crédit Suisse / HRS with the architects Richter-Dahl Rocha & Associés, Lausanne in collaboration with the engineering office INGENI, Lausanne.
The constructive highlight of the project is the steel roof with its trapezoidal geometry, which covers the building over a total length of 116 m and a width of 67 m and carries the foyer with a span of 40 m free.
The load-bearing capacities of the complex joints and their optimization in terms of manufacturing aspects were part of the targets for us. The order of connecting the circular hollow sections in the joints and the optimal designs of the load introduction plates were determined by means of numerical investigations in close cooperation of INGENI, KoRoH and Zwahlen & Mayr, who were responsible for the manufacture of the structure.
